Note that Bishkek is in the Chuy region of Kyrgyzstan. On the other end of the square is the Kiev Avenue--you can imagine that the street was named (Kiev) during the Soviet era. Panfilov (a district of Chuy region) and Erkindik (freedom) streets are on the east and west sides of the square.
